At Zestiny Farm, our commitment to regenerative agriculture goes hand-in-hand with a strong focus on soil science. Welcome to our Regenerative Lab – a space dedicated to experimenting with various techniques and inputs to improve soil health and crop vitality.
When we first came to Zestiny Farm, over-enthusiasm led us to treat the entire property as one large experiment. It wasn’t great. We soon learnt that “trial and error” is much more valuable when performed on a smaller scale with more control. And so we now have a designated experimental patch where we A/B test across around 80 mini garden beds. We take a methodical approach, conducting trials with both cutting-edge and ancient techniques, various plant varieties, and diverse inputs including heirloom seeds. And when we discover methods that enhance nutrient density, we can then roll them out across the farm.
At the moment, there’s not much to see; our experimental patch is primarily filled with tomato seedlings, each carefully monitored for responses to different inputs. Alongside these seedlings, we’re also nurturing a worm farm which allows us to create liquid gold – our nutrient-rich worm tea. This organic fertiliser is a cornerstone of our regenerative practices, helping us produce healthy crops without relying on synthetic inputs.
Additionally, our composting area has proven to be a game changer, enriching our soil with vital nutrients and supporting our commitment to sustainability. By turning organic waste into high-quality compost, we can improve soil structure and fertility, fostering a thriving ecosystem for our crops.
At Zestiny Farm, our Regenerative Lab is a vital component of our mission to cultivate the healthiest, most nutrient-dense produce possible. It’s a space for innovation and learning, ensuring we’re always moving forward both smarter and more sustainably.
