At Zestiny Farm, the key to our success in growing a diverse range of vegetables is our greenhouse. It's been a game-changer for us, allowing us to extend the growing season and nurture crops that thrive in a controlled environment.
However, as our farm expands, so do our needs—we’re rapidly outgrowing the current space. Fortunately, we’ve ordered several polytunnels that will increase our undercover growing area by five times!
This extra space will allow us to produce even more vegetables, herbs, and greens year-round.
Currently in the greenhouse you’ll find over 20 different varieties of seedlings, preparing for their time in the sun. We’re growing everything, from leafy greens to root vegetables, which will be planted out as the seasons progress.
Growing a good variety of produce will help us continue our mission of offering fresh, seasonal, nutrient-dense produce to our customers year-round.
But that’s not all! We’ve also ventured into the world of aquaponics, a sustainable farming system that combines fish and plant production in a circular system. In this setup, the fish waste provides the perfect natural fertiliser for our plants, allowing us to grow the healthiest greens without the need for synthetic chemicals. It’s part of our broader mission to create a more sustainable and regenerative farming practice.
However, every innovation comes with its challenges. Sadly, we experienced what we’ve come to call the Great Zestiny Massacre—we lost nearly all of our 100 Silver Perch due to an oxygen issue in the tanks. It was a sad loss and a tough lesson, but we’re bouncing back. Our next batch of Jade Perch is on the way, and soon we’ll be fully operational with two types of aquaponics: deep water cultivation for lettuce and greens, and grow beds for tomatoes and eggplants.
Stay tuned to see our new fish in action!
