At Zestiny Farm, we don’t aspire to raise livestock, but our friendly farm animals play a crucial role in our mission of regenerative farming. They contribute to the health of our ecosystem while also adding a bit of charm to our daily operations.

Our 250 egg-laying chickens are some of most obvious hardworking members of our farm family. These feathered friends not only provide us with fresh eggs but also help maintain our soil health by eating pests and fertilising the ground. We’ve designed a special caravan for them, which we move every couple of days to ensure they have fresh forage and a clean-living environment.

Then there’s Nutella, our aptly named Tamworth pig. Her primary role is to help eliminate nutgrass, one of our most stubborn weeds. If only she would focus more on digging and less on strawberries and wallowing! Despite her leisurely lifestyle, Nutella is an important part of our weed management strategy and a much loved member of the farm family.

Excitingly, we’re also expanding our pollination efforts. In just a few days, we’ll grow from a single honeybee hive to over twenty-five. This increase will not only enhance pollination across our crops but will also boost our honey harvest, allowing us to enjoy the sweet rewards of our hard work.

Lastly, if my wife, Tania, gets her way, we could soon welcome a pair of Mediterranean mini-donkeys to our farm. Their primary job would be to act as guardians for our chickens against pesky foxes. We’re yet to see how keen they are with that plan… Hopefully they have a better work ethic than Nutella! At Zestiny Farm, our animals contribute to our regenerative practices while enriching our farming experience. They remind us that sustainable farming is about balance, and biodiversity, with animals, big and small, playing an important role. Plus they’re darn cute!
