At Zestiny Farm, the true magic lies in our water courses, which play a vital role in sustaining our ecosystem and nourishing our crops.
It’s hard to overstate the importance of a good water source in agriculture. At Zestiny Farm we’re fortunate to have a couple of bores, a pristine creek reminiscent of a prehistoric landscape, and a series of five dams. Some of these dams are spring-fed, creating a rich habitat that ultimately leads to our blue lake. Although it’s not always blue, and not quite large enough for the title “lake”, it’s undoubtedly one of the coolest features of our farm.
This area of New South Wales is known for its pristine spring water which many well-known bottled water brands source as high quality drinking water. But at Zestiny Farm we take the approach of utilising this precious resource to directly irrigate our vegetables. By doing so, we’re not just sustaining our crops, we’re also helping to preserve the natural beauty of our land.
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing though …
In what is probably the biggest disaster since taking over the farm, we experienced a staggering 1,000 mm of rain over just two days. This amount of water caused significant damage, washing away the dam wall and leaving us without reliable irrigation for our vegetables. It was a heartbreaking setback at the time, but nature has a way of bouncing back.
Today, our water courses are back to their former glory. They’re home to abundant native flora and wildlife, even the elusive platypus.
Our water courses are more than just an agricultural resource; they’re a vital part of our regenerative farming practices, allowing us to grow nutrient-dense produce while nurturing the rich biodiversity that makes our farm unique. And the native species that call Zestiny home have just as important a role in our vision as our beloved farm animals.
